When considering the topic of earning money from mining in detail, the question – what are nodes in cryptocurrencies – often arises. This is a relevant point because nodes are any type of computer with software that makes the blockchain network accessible. And mining is virtually impossible without this condition.
Let’s analyze in detail what are nodes in cryptosystems and study their types. Ordinary nodes, masternodes and supernodes have interesting features, functions and possibilities for users. Let’s analyze what these elements of the blockchain network are used for.
We’ll talk about nodes, masternodes (Dash as an example), ordinary nodes ans supernodes(NEM as an example). So let’s start!
What are nodes in cryptocurrencies ?
For a better perception and full understanding of what cryptocurrency nodes are, we need to remember the basics of blockchain. More precisely, the principles of functioning of the distributed ledger, which is the basis for almost all coins.
Blockchain is a decentralized system that stores all data about the transactions performed within it. This amount of information is converted by hashing into a fixed-sized bit string. It forms a block in the blockchain that contains a strict chronological sequence of encrypted data.
Each cryptosystem operates its own unique blockchain, so the chain contains information exclusively about the transactions of its coins. The name of the cryptocurrency, network and blockchain are usually identical.
But hashed data doesn’t just “fly” around the digital space of the Internet. The chain must have a certain sequence to form a specific path to the last block.
This is where many hundreds or thousands of computers or mobile devices with crypto wallets installed on them are used. Such a computer with a wallet supporting a digital coin will be a base node.
Within a single cryptosystem, an entire number of active nodes have multiple connections provided through a peer-to-peer protocol (P2P network). This communication ensures a fast exchange of data between the underlying network elements. Information on transactions made within the system are transmitted so that each blockchain has the same sequence of records in blocks.
However, the way transactions are committed is different from nodes, of which there are several types.
Types and kinds of nodes in cryptocurrencies
Essentially, there is a division for blockchain nodes into 3 main types. Each category is characterized by certain parameters:
- amount of information to be stored;
- formation conditions;
- the capabilities provided to the users.
Ordinary nodes

Simply put, an ordinary node is a computer of any user working with a particular cryptocurrency. Device has a wallet that supports that coin and allows you to store the right amount of it. Ordinary nodes are divided into two types.
Full nodes
This is the name given to nodes that represent a computer with a 24-hour Internet connection. On its HDD is stored the full blockchain of some cryptosystem – the entire sequence of blocks with information about transactions.
Full nodes don’t interact with each other but are themselves nodes for loading and confirming new transactions. For this purpose, rules are used, which are set through a consensus algorithm.
When rules are violated within a single transfer or in a part of the chain, the full node ignores it. That is, defective transactions aren’t included in the cryptocurrency blockchain structure.
An important characteristic of full nodes is their “duty” to control the execution of blockchain algorithms. In the case of a large flow of invalid transactions, they can even initiate a temporary blocking of the source.
In other words, full nodes guarantee the highest level of cryptosystem security. Transfers within it are reliably protected.
To achieve full node status, a user must install full cryptocurrency wallet versions on his/her PC. When they are being installed, they download the full blockchain volume to the hard drive.
Examples of popular heavy storages are Litecoin Core, Ethereum Wallet, Bitcoin Core, etc.
Important: When selecting a crypto wallet to form a full node, you must consider the duration of the full synchronization process. It takes more than one day. In addition, a sufficient amount of free space on HDD is required:
- Litecoin Core – now >110 GB;
- Ethereum Wallet – over 230 GB;
- Bitcoin Core – over 355 GB!
Lightweight nodes
In fact, this version of the node is also a standalone PC connected to the network. A crypto wallet is installed on it, but full transaction blocks aren’t downloaded.
This is how a lightweight node is formed. One of two options is implemented – synchronization with the database hosted inside a third-party server or saving the headers.
Most of the lightweight crypto wallets are multi-currency storages, so they are used for several types of coins at once. You don’t need a large amount of hard drive space to install and use them. Crypto transactions are automatically redirected to a database on a third-party server. The established blockchain isn’t used, which reduces the level of anonymity.
An interesting feature is that lightweight nodes are capable of validating invalid transactions. Of course, such errors are detected later, since the final validation is performed in full nodes. Although such defective transfers contribute to users losing money.
It is possible to become a lightweight node with the help of wallets – Exodus, Jaxx, Electrum, etc.
Masternodes

In blockchain and mining, masternodes are full versions of nodes that perform a number of additional functions. There is a reward for such work.
Users can become masternodes by installing a wallet containing the full blockchain. Then they will start to fulfill some set of additional conditions.
Today, Dash blockchain remains the most popular system with a masternode structure. Participants with the full Dash blockchain do verification of transactions made on the network, as well as allow 2 additional tasks.

- Thanks to PrivateSend technology, the anonymity of DASH coin transfers is increased. If a member of the system sends coins to a particular address, his/her transaction is split to form separate fragments.
Such fragments circulate among nodes for up to 3-4 iterations and then leave to the recipient, reassembling into a chain. This mechanism almost completely eliminates the possibility of transaction tracking.
- InstantSend technology enables instant transactions. Dash’s use of InstantSend delegates primary control of transfers to masternodes rather than miners. The latter have a higher priority, so coins arrive in recipients’ wallets almost in seconds.
What do you receive for being a Masternode
Taking the Dash network as an example, we can note the following privileges that users with masternode status receive.
- They are given access to use the Dash Evolution separate payment system.
- Full Dash blockchain owners gain the right to participate in discussions and solutions related to the development of the system. Because of this feature, the Dash network receives one of the highest degrees of decentralization.
- Node owners begin to receive a 45% reward for checking each block.
New blocks in the Dash network are generated every 2m 34s. During this time, about 453 DASH coins are distributed to all masternodes. The blockchain here receives about 25 new blocks per hour.
It is not difficult to calculate the total hourly earnings of the entire group of masternodes as a whole – 11,325 coins. There are 4 174 nodes, so each one earns about 2.72 DASH per hour. That’s not a bad income, considering that the dash is quoted at $47.60 on the crypto market, according to CoinMarketCap.com. I’m sure many will want to become a Dash masternode.
But such a goal is not easy to achieve. At the very least you need:
- software to be installed, configured and running smoothly;
- a computer with a powerful operating system, graphics card and processor. A large supply of HDDs is important to perform the server function;
- create a cryptocurrency wallet for Dash coins;
- put 1,000 DASH on the account and don’t use them.
This freezing of funds confirms the seriousness of a system member’s desire to become a masternode. Given the current price of the DASH coin, the user needs to invest a large amount.
The funds, it must be said, are not insignificant. Practically, this condition is very reasonable, since the masternode in the dash cryptocurrency system is a key element of reliability, speed and anonymity of transactions.
In addition to the Dash system, masternodes are present in blockchain projects such as:
- Vsync;
- PivX;
- Energi;
- Neutron;
- Syscoin;
- Firo;
- etc.
Many people who want to become a masternode are looking for new cryptocurrency projects, because buying into them is not that expensive and allows you to “roll in” much earlier. However, as we know, choosing a new project with prospects is quite a difficult thing to do, because no one sees the future and cannot guarantee whether this or that project will survive at all.
Supernodes
The third type of node in cryptocurrency systems is a supernode. This is a specific kind of node, fully functioning today only in the NEM system.

In its essence, it is an analogue of a masternode, but working without a cryptocurrency wallet. Becoming a supernode in the NEM network is even more difficult, and not only because the function of the node is performed by an endpoint in the cryptocurrency API.
For example, the following conditions must be met:
- an offline version of NEM;
- create an account. Put at least 3,000,030 XEM on the account in it. Of this amount, 3,000,000 XEM are “frozen” provision, and 30 coins are for commissions when activating the delegated fee, as well as sending a message about registration;
- wait 6 hours;
- receive the key;
- finish not easy setup of the program;
- pass supernode testing in the NEM system.
By the way, today the quote of XEM coin is equal to $0.04, hence, to ensure the status of the supernode you need to bring 120,000 dollars. This is a very large sum. The remuneration for transaction processing is 140,000 XEM per day for all functioning nodes.
So, with 150 supernodes, each will earn 933 NEM coins per day. Not bad, but the one-time investment makes this way of earning not so realistic for 95.99% of users.
Conclusion
If you are thoroughly engaged in the study of cryptocurrency, the topic of nodes, masternodes, and supernodes is incredibly interesting. In addition, there is a practical benefit to it, because you can form a source of passive income on masternodes and supernodes.
Yes, obtaining these statuses is not easy, primarily because of the requirement of a large investment. But it is possible to find cryptocurrency options in which nodes, masternodes, and supernodes are available on acceptable terms.
This topic is useful for people who operate or mine digital coins. Now it is important to understand what nodes in cryptocurrencies and mining are, and to remember their features and functions.
